LEE CURTIS
LEE CURTIS

TRAINER

Lee is a Group 1 winning trainer based at Rosehill Gardens, Sydney, Australia.

He has been a licensed Sydney trainer since 1994. Based at Rosehill, Lee maintains a boutique stable of 14 horses with access to state-of-the-art facilities afforded by the premier training location.

Lee has always had a deliberate strategy to limit his stable size to ensure each horse is treated an individual and allows Lee and his staff to give each horse the individual care and training regime it requires to prosper as a racehorse.  Reflective of this approach, Lee has always been regarded as a trainer that gets more than his share of good horses.

Some notable gallopers Lee has put the polish on over the years, include group performers like Private Steer (in her formative years), Prince of Play, Rightson, Thebigiam, Press Report, Meryl, Mistegic (Group 1 Galaxy winner, Champion NSW sprinter and $1.7m) and Lasqueti Sprit.

Recent highlights for the stable include winning the VRC Crown Oaks Gr1 (Lasqueti Spirit), the BJ McLachlan Stakes Gr3 and the Scarborough Stakes Gr3 (Meryl) plus placings in the Chipping Norton Stakes G1, the ATC Oaks Gr1 (Lasqueti Spirit), Red Roses Gr3, Thoroughbred Club Stakes Gr3, Heritage Stakes Listed (Meryl), Silver Slipper Gr2, Breeders Classic Gr2, Hawkesbury Crown Stakes Gr3 (Press Report)

Lee has a constant stream of young horses coming through the ranks and is always active at the major yearling sales.

He has long been actively involved with operational aspects of the stable, attends trackwork and regularly manages the team of staff and horses in Lee & Cherie‘s absence.

CHERIE CURTIS

CHERIE CURTIS

TRAINER

Cherie grew up in a racing enthusiastic family. Her parents owned & operated a thoroughbred agistment farm near the picturesque town of Berry, NSW. The family owned many racehorses and broodmares, and Cherie involved her teenage years in the day to day running of the property.

One of her earliest influences in the racing industry was local master standardbred trainer and driver turned thoroughbred trainer Kevin Robinson.

In 2003 Cherie moved to Rosehill to work for Lee Curtis with aspirations of one day becoming a horse trainer herself. She quickly cemented herself as a valuable member of the team, full of enthusiasm and a will to learn. In 2005 Cherie was made Foreperson and was regularly in charge of the interstate travelling horses.

In 2008 Cherie took a few months away from the stable to follow the triple crown contender Big Brown around the United States. She was fortunate enough to spend time with Hall of fame trainer Carl Nafzger and Breeders Cup winning trainer Ian Wilkes during her stay. The contacts provided by Wilkes saw Cherie mixing with the elite in American racing and she obtained first-hand experience of the different training methods and environment of horse racing in the USA at the highest level.

Cherie continued over the years to become more involved in every aspect of the business, beyond stable life, to administrative management, owner relationships, yearling sale activities etc. In doing so, Cherie transitioned from employee to business partner. And along the way, Lee & Cherie married in 2015, and they now have 3 children together, Harvey, Jackson & Alexis.

In December 2020, Lee and Cherie made the training partnership official. The new partnership has been very well received by clients, peers and industry commentators.

Harvey enjoys attending the yearling sales and learning about pedigrees. He is often seen calling races using toy cars and recording his own tipping show on a Friday night. His favourite media personality is Ray Thomas as he always includes the stable’s horses in his tips.

Harvey’s favourite horse is Meryl, who he was lucky enough to score some time off school to watch race in Melbourne. She is now retired and in foal.
