Great week at Magic Millions

Jan 18, 2017

Lee and Cherie were in attendance alongside a group of owners at the Magic Millions yearling sale last week.

The week began early for the team who spent the first few days prior to the sale working through their shortlists and inspecting lot after lot.

In the sweltering heat of the Gold Coast complex the pair worked their shortlist down and by Wednesday were well prepared for the 6 days of auctions ahead.

The first to go through the ring on the list was a bay colt by Smart Missile.

Purchased for $60,000.

By Smart Missile, a son of Fastnet Rock. He was a very promising two year old himself having won the very first race of the season, the Breeders Plate. He later won the Todman Slipper trial, a lead up race to the Golden Slipper. He was unfortunately scratched at the barrier when favourite for the richest two year old race in the world, The Golden Slipper.

Smart Missile has been at stud since 2012 and his oldest progeny are three year olds. He is the champion first season sire of 2016 and is currently leading the second season sire list. He stands at Arrowfield Stud in NSW.

His dam Gentle Spirit raced herself as a two year old. She is a sister to Temple of Boom and Spirit of Boom, both raced and won numerous times as two year olds. They were two outstanding racehorses, both Group 1 winners who amassed a combined prizemoney of over $4M. Spirit of Boom now stands at stud for $11,000 and his first yearlings were sold last week at Magic Millions.

The colts in this family are standout on performance and on the way this boy looks we cant see why he cant make a name for himself too.

"I loved the colt. He is a real professional, he has a great stride when he walks. He's strong, athletic, smart and just ticks all the boxes. I can't believe we picked him up for $60k. I was prepared to spend double on him!" Lee said.

This colt will be raced as a Women in racing partnership. Magic Millions offer a brilliant incentive to attract women to racing by offering a $500,000 bonus to be split amongst the first 4 horses that pass the post owned by women in the 2yo Magic Millions race. This means that even if your horse doesn't run in the placings it may still win the bonus. This year the winner of the bonus finished 8th and picked up $325,000.

Whilst walking around the complex and inspecting more yearlings Frank & Christine Cook found a Medgalia D'Oro filly who they wished to one day add to their broodmare band.

Purchased for $75,000.

By brilliant American racehorse and sire Medaglia D'Oro, a son of El Prado. His G1 wins include the Travers at Saratoga Racecourse, The Whitney HCP at Saratoga and the Donn HCP at Gulfstream Park. Medaglia D'Oro went to stud in the northern hemisphere in 2005. Since that time he has produced a staggering 576 winners and 94 individual stakes winners. He has stood only a handful seasons in Australia, 2007, 2011-2016. His best southern hemisphere progeny include the Golden Slipper winner Vancouver.

This filly is from the Group 3 STC Birthday Card stakes winning mare Imana. Imana won five races from 1100-1600m in Sydney and was stakes placed on 9 occasions. She is by Kentucky Derby winning stallion Thunder Gulch.

Medaglia D'Oro and Thunder Gulch mares are a superb match. The cross producing 2 group 1 winners. The cross on Medaglia D'Oro and Imana shows 25 individual blacktype horses.

Frank and Christine kindly appointed Lee to train their new filly.

Later on Day 1 a magnificent Savabeel filly from the Sledmere draft was to go under the hammer.

Purchased for $150,000.

By Savabeel, New Zealand's leading sire. A son of the mighty Zabeel and Grandson of the great Sir Tristram. Savabeel is bred in the purple and he has lived up to his rich bloodlines by siring 12 individual Group 1 winners along with more than 40 other Stakes winning progeny. His progeny have sold up to $875,000. Savabeel is a known sire of Oaks and Derby horses and this filly was purchased with another Oaks success in mind.

Our filly is from Make A Wish, a Winning Pins mare, this filly was bred on the same line as Group 1 winner Brambles. Her second dam Starcent was the joint 3rd top filly in NZ 1994-1995. She is the producer of 11 winners including many blacktype performers. The family is proven to work extremely well with Savabeel with 3 stakes performers by the stallion directly related on the dam side.

This filly was chosen on pedigree by Lee and Frank Cook and purchased by Frank's breeding arm Mystery Downs.

Lee & Frank have already had great success together having recently won the VRC Oaks with Lasqueti Spirit.

This girl will too sport Franks famous maroon, yellow & white colours!

"She's outstanding. I didn't think I could afford her. The stallion stands at $100k. They are brilliant racehorses, especially the fillies. I went and found Frank and he loved her just as much as I did. Frank had other astute advisors look at the filly and they couldn't fault her on type or page. I'm stoked to be training her."

Day 2 was fairly quiet, the team were sent down as under bidders numerous times and went home empty handed.

The disappointment of missing out on the second day was quickly diminished on Day 3 when the team snagged an outstanding colt they thought would go right past their limit.

Purchased for $120,000.

By Champion 2 year old son of Lonhro, Pierro. Pierro was an outstanding juvenile, undefeated as a two year old he produced a perfect run into the Golden Slipper having won the Breeders Plate, Todman Slipper trial and Silver Slipper. He went on to win the Golden Slipper beating Snitzerland and Samaready. He finished off the triple crown winning the Sires Produce Stakes 1400m and Champagne Stakes 1600m. He is arguably one of the best two year olds to have raced in Australia.

At three he defied the odds and became the worlds best 3yo Sprinter after winning the Canterbury Stakes and George Ryder Stakes. He won or was placed at that elite level on 6 more occasions in that season.

Pierro went to stud in 2013. His oldest progeny are now 2 year olds.

Our colt's dam Walk Alone is a Listed winning mare by Honour and Glory. She won on 5 occasions up to 1400m including the Toy Show Quality at Randwick. She is from the family of Rain Affair, a 12 time multiple Group winning sprinter.

Walk Alone is the producer of two foals to race, You'll Never, a 7 time winning Saturday class metropolitan son of Commands who has amassed $500k in prizemoney in Sydney. Coventry, a 5 time winning son of Lonhro.

This colt oozes style. He is a flashy, strong tall fellow with a glowing coat. He is the image of his sire.

Ben & Ashleigh Kelly have chosen him as their favourite and are very excited to be in the partnership.

During the day Frank, who looked at every Epaulette in the sale found the best filly by young sire in the sale.

Purchased for $150,000

By Epaulette, an outstanding son of Commands. He won twice as a two year old, including winning the Listed Black Opal Stakes. He also finished second in the Todman Slipper trial. He was spelled after the Golden slipper and brought back for a Golden Rose preparation. He won the Group 1  Golden Rose second up from a spell. He then travelled to Melbourne and won the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and finished 3rd in the sire making Caulfield Guineas. He returned in the Autumn and as a three year old finished 2nd at WFA level in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes behind the mighty Black Caviar. He added another Group 1 win in the Doomben 10,000 defeating the great sprinters Sea Siren & Buffering.

Epaulette's oldest progeny are now yearlings. They are all outstanding strong types. They were very well received at the sale.

Our filly's dam Academy Idol is a winning daughter of Made of Gold. Made of Gold is doing an excellent job as a broodmare sire, currently highlighted by the outstanding Hawkes trained colt Star Turn.

Academy Idol is a full sister to Cosmic Strike, a multiple group winner of 5 races. She is the dam of three winners, including the stakes placed Chosen Idol, a winner of 5 races, one as a two year old and Miss Idyllic, the two time winning filly by Exceed and Excel. She herself is stakes placed in the MRC Debutant Stakes at two years.

This filly is no doubt the pick of the Epaulette fillies. A cracking type, she looks like she will race early.

She too will be a Women in Racing partnership and will sport the Cook colours.

Not long after the Epaulette filly Frank & Lee spotted outstanding value in a beautiful filly by Stratum.

Purchased for $100,000.

By a son of the great Redoute's Choice in Stratum who is absolutely flying at the moment. He is the winner of the 2005 G1 Golden Slipper Stakes. He is has been an established top line sire for many seasons. He has sired 394 winners and 31 stakes winners including siring a Golden Slipper winner in Crystal Lily and the brilliant 4 time Group 1 winning mare Streama.

Stratum's current stars are Stratum Star and Takedown, the pair having won the final two Group 1 races of the year in Western Australia.

Stratum has a fantastic record getting top class two year olds as well as horses of both sexes that train on in their 3, 4, 5 & 6 year old seasons.

He is a tremendously versatile stallion and has been a go to sires amongst many of the best stables and studs.

Her dam Adonia Queen is from a very strong American family. Our filly's granddam is the 10 time winning, dual Group 1 winning mare Queen's Court Queen. Winner of the Santa Maria Santa Margarita Invitational & Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita Park, California.

Our filly's dam has had one foal to race, Acatour. He is a very exciting, extremely promising colt by Sebring. He is the winner of 3 races in Sydney and was placed 3rd in the MRC Gothic Stakes before finishing 5th in the Crabine Club Stakes last October. Team Snowden train the colt and he is definitely a colt that is on the up. He has enormous potential to boost this pedigree even further and is definite stallion potential.

"She will furnish into a lovely filly, she still has some growing to do but she has everything there. Her family is about to explode and I think she was extremely good value. I'm looking forward to seeing what she's got". Lee said.

Later on Friday another colt was to catch Lee's eye.

Purchased for $80,000.

By Foxwedge, an outstanding sprinting son of Fastnet Rock. Foxwedge won two races at 2yrs but it wasn't until his 3 year old season we would see the best from this colt. He kicked off his 3yo season with a win in the San Dominico Stakes at Randwick. He then ran two good races when placing second and fourth in the Run to the Rose and the Golden Rose. He followed up with a win in the Roman Consul stakes before heading down to Melbourne. He was narrowly beaten in the Ascot Vale Stakes finishing second to Sepoy. He ran third in the Newmarket behind Hay List and Buffering. He then turned the tables on the pair winning the Group 1 William Reid stakes at Mooney Valley.

Foxwedge was sent to stud in 2012. He is currently running 2nd on the second season sires list behind Smart Missile but is beating him on winners to runners percentages. There seems to be a similar rivalry amongst these two at stud as there was in their juvenile careers.

This colt is from the Starcraft mare Bikini Star. As a yearling Bart Cummings purchased her from Karaka in New Zealand for $320,000.

The mare won 2 races at Newcastle from 8 starts. She is from the family of the champion sprinters Bentley Biscuit and Thorn Park.

He is the first foal from the mare.

"He is a strong, robust looking fellow who really takes the eye. He ticks all the conformation boxes and is a powerful walker. I am delighted to have Frank & Christine as well as Aquis Farm will race this horse with us". Said Lee.

This colt will also be raced in the famous Cook colours, Frank and Christine are happy to join in this partnership along with the vendors the world class breeding and racing establishment Aquis Farm.

End of Friday Sales we have 6 new horses on our books. 3 for the Cooks and 3 purchased by Lee.
