It was a very exciting morning at Randwick with the first of the two year old trials for the season being run.
The stable had runners in both heats, I Love Lucy and Avaricious who both won very well.
Lee was confident of two good performances on the trackwork of both fillies, Lee likening them to his previous good two year old sprinters Mistegic and Meryl at the same age.
Both fillies sported the Frank & Christine Cook colours, I Love Lucy in the traditional white crossed sashes and Avaricious in the all ladies Christine Cook syndicate diamonds.
Both girls are on target to start in the first two year old race for fillies of the season, the Listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick on Saturday 3rd October and then a Magic Millions campaign will be mapped out for the pair.
Heat 10, I Love Lucy was the first progeny of the very exciting Japanese sire Maurice to hit the track in Australia. Purchased from the Arrowfield draft by Lee and the team at Gold Coast Magic Millions for $150,000 with Arrowfield retaining a share, she looked speedy from day 1. Lucy was a little slow on jumping but quickly mustered speed and put in a scintilllating front running performance to score by 3/4 of a length with a further 5 lengths to the third horse.
Heat 11 was won by Avaricious, purchased and selected by Lee and the Cooks for $200,000 at Gold Coast Magic Millions. She is by the outstanding sprinter Extreme Choice who himself was a precocious two year old having won the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes. Avaricious drew wide and showed terrific gate speed to lead the trial and finish off strongly down the straight winning by 1 3/4 lengths with a further 3 lengths to third.
